Purine salvage is required for (p)ppGpp synthesis

What is it about?

The enzyme xanthine dehydrogenase, which is required for salvage (recycling) of purine nucleotides is also needed for synthesis of the alarmone (p)ppGpp.

Why is it important?

Since (p)ppGpp is involved in upregulation of virulence genes, this works shows that purine salvage is linked to virulence.
