What is it about?
More than 90% of malignant tumors of the head and neck are oral squamous cell carcinomas. Early detection of oral squamous cell carcinoma using salivary biomarkers could prevent malignant transformations and enhance patient survival as the overall 5‐year survival rate of patients ranges from 40% to 50% and is between the 6th to 8th most prevalent cancer globally.

Why is it important?
Late diagnosis of OSCC has been identified as an important contributing factor for reduced patient survival rates (15%— 50% reduction in survival) highlighting the need for improved diagnostics to aid early stage identification of OSCC. Recent studies demonstrate the usefulness of saliva as a source of physiopathological biomarkers in the early detection and diagnosis of cancers occurring in the oropharyngeal area and to date, there is no systematic review that simultaneously compares the efficacy of three most promising classes of salivary biomarkers for the detection of OSCC and/or HNSCC. Thus the primary objective of this systematic review, therefore, is to compare the efficacy of the principal salivary biomarkers so far: cytokines IL‐8 and IL1‐β; mRNAs DUSP‐1 and S100P, and miRNAs miR‐200a and miR‐125a
Perspectives
This article was my very first publication and was the topic for my final year dissertation during my undergraduate studies in Dentistry at UCHCEU University Cardenal Herrera, Valencia, Spain. It was subsequently published in "The Journal of Oral Pathology & Medicine" as a special edition article. The achievement was and still is a most humbling experience and has encouraged me to continue contributing to the field of medicine and dentistry with the aim of inspiring future health care professionals and work to benefit the community.
