What is it about?

Nursing home corporations listed on public exchanges reported strong financial performances during 2020. Financial measures reported to the Securities & Exchange Commission do not match the industry narrative of large financial losses due to COVID.

Why is it important?

Industry claims of losses due to COVID are not supported by financial data. Such claims mislead legislators and the public regarding the level of spending needed to provide quality care versus provider/investor profits.

Perspectives

Activists and advocates have been stymied in their attempts to achieve government support for better nursing home care by industry propaganda of low net income (low profit). Available financial data suggests that earnings have been strong and cash flow through chain facilities to investors has been robust.
