What is it about?
Uric acid has been identified as a potential cardiovascular risk factor but debate is undergoing on this point. We evaluated target organ damage, as surrogate end-point of cardiovascular diseases. What we found is that only the renal damage is predicted by uric acid values while the other (cardiac, carotid and aortic) are probably related to the renal one.

Why is it important?
Trials on the effects of uric acid lowering therapy on cardiovascular disease are ongoing. Our study is very important to understand the mechanism by the lowering effect can act on the total cardiovascular morbidity. In fact it probably goes through the cardiovascular target organ damage.
Perspectives
In perspective this paper could help understanding the mechanism through uric acid act on cardiovascular target organ damage and, finally, on the cardiovascular morbidity and mortality.
