What is it about?
The study looked at correlates for multiple suicide attempt status in psychiatrically hospitalized inmates, including historical variables, such as criminal history, and responses on standardized suicide risk measures.

Why is it important?
There has been very little study of the utility of suicide risk measures in correctional samples nor of the characteristics of inmates who may be at heightened risk of death by suicide.
Perspectives
The study described in this paper resulted eventually in identifying several gaps in what was available for clinicians to use in evaluating patients in correctional settings. The difficulties in suicide risk formulation makes the availability of a broad range of evaluative tools important.
