What is it about?
Xylo-oligosaccharides (XOs) with different degree of polymerisation (DP) can be obtained by hydrolysis on xylan using xylanase. The unwanted impurities in enzymatic liquor are monosaccharides (mainly xylose and arabinose), salts and pigments. This work presents the purification and enrichment XOs from XOs syrup using diafiltration process combined with nanofiltration membrane based computational prediction. The models for predicting membrane flux (Jv) and observed retention (Robs) were also established using real-time trans-membrane pressure (ΔP) and syrup concentration (Cf) as the input data.

Why is it important?
In this work, a volume balance and mass balance model for the diafiltration-concentration joint process on XOs syrup were established. Results predicted by the models were in good agreement with experimental data. The data for simulation in diafiltration and concentration mode were completely independently of that for fitting in separation performance models in previous work. Furthermore, the models are applied to accurately simulate data from two syrups with different content ratio.
