A highly resistant structure between cuticle and cortex of human hair

What is it about?

This article shows that a membrane-like structure is located at the interface between cuticle and cortex of human hair. This structure exhibits especially high resistance against chemical treatment and is thought to be the region in which the proximal root of cuticle cells are embedded.
