What is it about?

An online survey was conducted with all Faculty of Dentistry staff and students to provide information on current Indigenous culture teaching and learning practices within Faculty of Dentistry programs at the University of Sydney.

Why is it important?

Indigenous Australians experience much more dental disease than non-indigenous Australians. Universities that have a dentistry program need to look at the best way to teach Indigenous culture, to increase dental students knowledge and understanding of Indigenous culture, and to improve the oral health of Indigenous peoples.

Perspectives

Much thought needs to go into improving Indigenous cultural teaching within universities. Dental students need to be exposed to an accurate history of Indigenous peoples, engagement with Indigenous communities, and reflection on these experiences to be able to help tackle Indigenous health inequalities.
