What is it about?
Empirical evidence is provided that bromeliads (Bromelia balansae, Bromeliaceae) benefit their mutualistic spider Psecas chapoda (Salticidae) by sheltering them from fire.

Why is it important?
The size of the spider population on plants decreased dramatically after the fire, but many individuals survived inside the bromeliads. The bromeliads contributed to the resilience of the spider population, as the spiders were not locally extinct and were able to recover their pre-fire population size after 5 months.
