Levothyroxine enhances glucose clearance and blunts the onset of experimental type 1 diabetes mellitus in mice

What is it about?

In this report López-Noriega et al. demonstrate that levothyroxine (T4) enhances glucose clearance in healthy mice via enhanced pancreatic β-cell turnover and increased expression and secretion of insulin. T4 increases β-cell proliferation, favoring the maintenance of insulin expression and secretion in the RIP-B7.1 model of experimental autoimmnune diabetes and increasing survival in a model of streptozotocin-induced diabetes.
