What is it about?

S. stipitis is a non-conventional yeast. We optimized media and process conditions to maximize the production of vitamin B9 from waste biomasses. We were able to obtain the highest amount of vitamin B9 reported in literature when considering productions on waste biomasses. We also developed and characterized a pretreatment method for the use of Unfermented Grape Marcs as a growth medium.

Why is it important?

In this paper we examined the ability of the yeast S. stipitis to produce vitamin B9 from waste biomasses. This is one of the few works exploiting the aerobic growth of this yeast, unlocking its potential towards the production of high-value compounds. To the best of our knowledge, we were able to obtain the highest quantity of vitamin B9 reported in literature when considering waste biomasses. We hope that this work will lay the foundations for further studies with S. stipitis.
