What is it about?
Many persons with suicidal ideation present to Emergency Departments. How and by whom these persons are best managed by is an open question. This opinion piece attempts to provide some answers to hopefully generate further discussion in the light of a recent case in Queensland, Australia.

Why is it important?
There would appear to be a variance in models of service that may account for role ambiguity for clinicians. In some cases practice variance negatively affect service quality.
Perspectives
Clinical practice is best when it is organic i.e. has buy in at the facility level. Imposing clinical practise from above,(top down) carries risks.
