What is it about?

We compare prototypical automatic represenations for user history. We design a data coverage view (i.e., what data has been interacted with previously) and an interaction history view (i.e., the prior analyst's steps). Our user study looked at participants' behaviors and reactions when picking up the analysis with either of these provenance representations.

Why is it important?

Data provenance helps provide context to decision-makers by telling the story of how something came to be. There are many different forms of provenance but few direct comparisons. This study reinforces the benefits of providing an overview first (i.e., Data coverage) when conducting a handoff analysis. We see the effects of overwhelm among participants provided interaction history, likely because it's too much information to review before they can complete their own investigation.
