What is it about?

This paper proposes a new direct ac-ac converter for medium-voltage applications that inherent all the attributes of conventional modular multilevel converter such as: *Modular structure (reduces delivery and maintenance time). *Internal fault management (safeguard against cell capacitor and switching device failures). *Independent control of active and reactive power). *Light weight and footprint compared to ac-dc converters of similar ratings; thus attractive for FACTS devices.

Why is it important?

The significance of this work: -Extends the application of direct ac-ac converters to medium and high voltage applications. -Provides method for construction of FACTS devices, which are much smaller and lighter compared to existing solutions that based on dc-ac converters (for the same power rating). -Unlike conventional matrix converter, the proposed ac-ac converter has modular structure with internal fault management. -Illustrates how a second harmonic can be used to decouple control of active power from that of the reactive power.

Perspectives

It is novel and interesting work, and practically useful work. So, I will say it is worth reading.
