What is it about?

Congestion is a major problem nowadays. Small to medium level cities often struggle to reduce the congestion, sometimes due to lack of funds to install traffic control systems. This paper presents a cost-effective solution for those cities. We used floating car data to retime the traffic signals leading to less delays.

Why is it important?

We present a rule-based traffic signal retiming strategy by utilizing floating car data. This approach improves the transparency of the control method to the end user or the traffic engineers. It can be implemented at the tactical level of urban traffic control hierarchy in Germany. We present a robust testing solution to evaluate the performance of the traffic control method using software-in-the-loop simulations.

Perspectives

During this work, I had a chance to work on project VinstaR where we aimed to design cost-effective strategies to manage the traffic. In addition, it was a great pleasure to work in an international team and I am happy that this collaboration brought meaningful outcomes.
