What is it about?

Common mode voltage, CMV, is an external electrical phenomena, which produces common mode current, CMC. This current is harmful to most electrical equipment, such as hospital, datacenters and distribution transformers, among others. Since it produces a high-three-phase instantaneous current. CMV is produced by braodcasting i.e. radio and TV transmitter antenas , and also by sollar and electrical storms near the electrical equipment. For instance, the 1988 sollar storm which produces a general blackout in the USA. Although active power filters, APFs, (shunt or series) should aid to avoid CMC issues, there are no control methods on this regard. So passive power filters (EMI filters) at the input of APFs are placed.

Why is it important?

In this paper, it is proposed a simple control method for shunt APFs based on a software one cycle control, OCC, to avoid CMC, since this method causes CMC inmunity. Above all, it could reduce operational costs in APFs, as passive power filters should be no longer necessary.

Perspectives

This article is on a new application area in APFs. In spite that mathematical explanation can be sort of complicate, proposed control system is quite simple.
