What is it about?

In distribution systems, the optimal distributed generation (DGs) placement and sizing problem needs to be redefined due to the introduction of renewable energy sources with reactive power handling capabilities. In this paper, an optimal DG placement & sizing problem is solved with reactive power management. A combined optimization problem providing optimal siting and sizing of DGs and scheduling of reactive controls is attempted using Improved Harmony Search (IHS) algorithm. The reactive control parameters are taken as taps of transformers and shunts. The results for 10 bus balanced and 25 bus unbalanced distribution systems are presented to demonstrate the proposed approach.
