What is it about?

In this paper, Light Emitting Diode (LED) driver design for streetlight application is given according to safety extra low voltage (SELV) norms without compromising high power quality and efficiency. The LED driver is developed in constant current mode in order to get same brightness even at forward voltage reduction of power LED due to ageing effect or phosphor quality. The current regulation is less than 2% for input voltage range (110V-275V AC). The input low voltage and high voltage cuts are implemented at 85VAC and 300VAC respectively with 25V hysteresis. The LED open as well short circuit protections are implemented in this design. The input current total harmonic distortion (THD) and power factor (PF) are less than 10% and more than 0.97 respectively. It is Implemented using low cost THD enhancer analog circuit. The power converter is of 90W rating with 24-36V/2.5A LED load operation.

Why is it important?

The idea here is to develop LED driver for high power quality, high efficiency, tight current regulation at SELV voltage range.

Perspectives

Idea is to understand controller behavior, switch selection and other passives to develop LED driver in SELV range.
