What is it about?

We investigate whether a small, low-cost 24-GHz FMCW radar can detect people through different wall materials. Machine learning models were used to detect human presence and distinguish between no movement and different levels of movement under different experimental conditions.

Why is it important?

Finding people trapped behind walls or rubble is an important challenge during search and rescue. Rescue teams need to know whether a person is present, whether they are alive, and whether they are moving or responsive. Through-wall radar could provide useful information in situations where people cannot be seen directly, helping rescuers better understand the condition of a trapped person.

Perspectives

This work may be of interest to researchers working on radar sensing, sensing technologies, machine learning, through-wall detection and disaster response. The results also highlight challenges that should be further investigated using more diverse environments, wall types and movement conditions.
