What is it about?

Industrial control systems with more actuation inputs than observed outputs are vulnerable to so-called undetectable attacks. In this paper, we propose a new countermeasure to make these attacks detectable by implementing a timing-based schedule that determines which actuators are active at any given time. We show the effectiveness of our approach on a power system test bed.

Why is it important?

Critical infrastructure is becoming more vulnerable to cyberattacks, increasing the need for research into new ways of preventing and detecting these attacks. Whilst existing countermeasures our available, they pose different trade-offs, making our proposed scheme favourable under certain circumstances.
