Why is it important?
A large-scale optical phased array design is challenging because of a fundamental trade-off between the array element spacing and the number of elements. This work presents an architecture-level innovation that is able to overcome this design challenge.
Perspectives
Optical phased array has numerous emerging applications such as a LiDAR sensor for self-driving cars, 3D holographic display for future mobile phones, and high-speed free-space optical communication for data centers.
