What is it about?

POFs (polymer optical fibers) gain importance in the area of the short distance communication technology continually since they can be manufactured more easily and more economically compared with glass fiber. In relation to copper, that, although technically obsolete, is the standard medium in industry and technology, POFs are space- and weight saving. Another reason is the not existing susceptibility to any kind of electromagnetic interference. That is also, besides the safety from interception, the great advantage in comparison with wireless communication systems.

Why is it important?

All these advantages open POFs a wide field of applications. Two applications are described more detailed. The first is the automotive sector. Since 2001, when BMW first released a bus-system for its new type “7” series, many companies introduced bus-systems with POFs as the communication medium. Not only high-class models are prepared with them, in the meantime more and more volume cars are equipped with this technology as well. At the moment just multimedia systems in the passenger compartment itself are replaced by POFs. But in the near future security relevant applications will use polymer fibers as well.

Perspectives

Another scenario is the in-house communication. In the future every house will be provided with “Triple-Play”. This means every household is connected with High-speed Internet, e.g. VHDSL, FTTH. So, it is possible to use VoIP, traditional Internet and IP-TV even in combination with HDTV. Several communication scenarios in the house itself can be imagined, where high bandwidth is required too,
