Perspectives

From my personal perspective, this publication is about bringing realism and responsibility into a space that is often driven by hype. I have seen how quickly organizations want to roll out “smart” IVRs once AI becomes available, and how slowly security, legal, and ethics teams are usually brought into the conversation. This work is my attempt to put all of those voices at the same table from the very beginning, instead of treating them as late-stage blockers. I also see this paper as a bridge between high-level AI ethics principles and the messy daily work of building and operating phone systems that real people rely on. Rather than adding generic warnings, we tried to show concrete patterns: where privacy can leak, where bias can sneak in, and how governance can be embedded into tools and processes in a practical way. My hope is that readers—whether they sit in engineering, security, or compliance—can use this as a shared playbook to modernize IVRs with AI while still sleeping well at night, knowing that user trust and safety have been treated as design requirements, not afterthoughts.
