What is it about?

This study looks at how political parties in Turkey use Facebook to communicate with the public outside an election period. We examined the official Facebook pages of active political parties and measured public engagement through reactions, shares, and comments. The results show that overall engagement is low, and that parties mostly use Facebook to send messages rather than to create two-way conversations with citizens.

Why is it important?

Social media gives political parties a direct way to reach citizens, listen to them, and encourage democratic participation. However, this study shows that this potential is not being fully used in Turkey. The findings suggest that political parties need to move beyond one-way communication and use platforms like Facebook to build more meaningful dialogue with the public.

Perspectives

This study shows that simply being active on social media is not the same as engaging with citizens. It highlights the need for political parties to use Facebook not only to share messages, but also to support real dialogue with the public.
