What is it about?

During the 2020 US election, Twitter experienced a significant influx of content related to claims of election fraud, often intertwined with hate speech and extremism. Our study focuses on examining the effectiveness of Twitter's internal policies in combating such content and suspending user accounts associated with these activities.

Why is it important?

The proliferation of election fraud claims and the coordinated efforts to promote them on Twitter raise concerns about the platform's ability to address harmful content. By studying the behavior of suspended, deleted, and active users after the election, we aim to shed light on potential loopholes in Twitter's approach and identify areas for improvement. Our findings have implications for maintaining the integrity of social media platforms during critical events like elections.

Perspectives

As we explore the future of Twitter, an interesting perspective emerges when we consider the platform in the hands of someone like Elon Musk. Musk has proven his influence and leadership in a variety of fields, including technology, space exploration, and transportation. How would Musk address the challenges posed by societal demands, such as elections and environmental issues, that are impacted by the content distributed on the platform? With his visionary mindset, Musk could introduce innovative strategies to address these challenges. He could use science to improve the platform's ability to detect and combat coordinated misinformation campaigns, creating a more reliable and secure environment for discussions about elections and other pressing issues. However, the trend is moving in the opposite direction, with recent changes to the Twitter API making it increasingly difficult to explore such issues. The shift to a paid model has limited researchers' access to valuable data and hinders research on how the platform functions and responds to new social demands. How can future research overcome this limitation and find alternative ways to gain insights into the dynamics of social media platforms like Twitter? Unfortunately, I cannot find a clear answer to this question at the moment. In summary, the study of coordinated content on Twitter during the 2020 U.S. election has provided valuable insights into the challenges facing the platform. Given the potential influence of influential figures like Elon Musk and the evolving landscape of social assertion, it is critical to further investigate and improve the mechanisms by which platforms deal with misinformation and ensure healthy digital discourse for all.
