A small-vessel competition was used to compare higher resolution RADARSAT-2 SAR imagery to known vessel locations. These data were used to characterize the ability to detect small vessels using RADARSAT-2 SAR.

Why is it important?
The ability to use Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) to observe small, non-metallic vessels is under-represented in the literature. This work takes the first steps to more systematically determining what class of small vessels may be detected.
