What is it about?
The increasing installation of power electronic devices in the electric power grid has been a growing concern for the asset owners. Since the level of these devices has become in parity with the AC components such as transformers and circuit breakers, a redefined asset management strategy is required. This has been previously thought insignificant as the power electronic devices monitoring, maintenance and lifecycle management has not been considered.

Why is it important?
Our studies show that the present monitoring, maintenance and ageing mechanism for the AC asset base can be applied to power electronic converter assets, however with a crude and redefined approach. The challenges arising from the device level behaviour of these new age assets requires physics of failure based approaches.
Perspectives
We hope this article will shed some light into the characterisation of power electronic assets in the electric power transmission network. Until now there has been sot a single roadmap developed for this purpose. We presented a research roadmap in this line for the characterisation of these devices.
