This paper describes design research investigating the co-design of sensory textiles to support the wellbeing of people with advanced dementia. These textiles have been shown to comfort, engage and stimulate people in the later stages of the disease.

Why is it important?
This paper describes new ways of extending and personalising the sensory properties of the textiles through the use of embedded electronics. This makes possible a person centred approach to designing for people living with dementia.
Perspectives
This interdisciplinary research involved people living with advanced dementia, their families, care professionals, textile designers, artists, computer scientists and representatives of dementia charities. It provides examples of how sensory textiles can be personalised using technology and used to enhance non-verbal communication and support the wellbeing of people with advanced dementia.
