What is it about?

Aim of the current research work is to design an innovative transmission system that can be easily integrated on construction machines such as concrete mixers to reduce noise, increase efficiency, and ensure a compact and rational design of the machine. Design/methodology/approach -Through the definition of the functional needs that the new transmission system has to satisfy in terms of efficiency and encumbrance, authors perform a comparison of different compact and efficient transmission systems, with a particular attention to selection and customization of the features that should be useful for a mass production using cheap and lightweight polymeric materials. Findings – Starting from system design specifications, authors were able to investigate an innovative transmission layout, whose feasibility is ensured by the smart exploitation of polymeric materials. At the end of the design process, a Wolfrom cycloidal drive was chosen with a design that is optimized to exploit specific features of the polymeric materials.
