What is it about?
The socio-cultural impacts of tourism changes places and people. This paper presents three World Heritage case studies to illustrate the different stages of tourism-induced changes at historic places that take place over a long period and discusses how their socio-cultural characteristics can be maintained under such situations.

Why is it important?
The study shows that, unlike the physical impacts, the impacts of tourism on the socio-cultural character of historic urban areas are long-term in nature and they are often not detected in questionnaire survey-based studies. A longitudinal observation-based study reveals that demographic changes are one of the primary causes of the loss of socio-cultural characteristics of historic urban areas in Asia.
