Why is it important?

This article shows that corporate world process improvement approaches - Lean and Six Sigma - hold great potential to improve the operations of NGOs and other humanitarian organisations in the developing world. World Vision East Africa Region demonstrated measured impact, for example: $1.5M annual cost reduction, 59% reduction in span time of targeted processes, and cultural transformation as well.

Perspectives

I was part of the Lean Aircraft Initiative at MIT that explored the applicability of Lean to the US defense aircraft industry. Lean was found to apply. Since then, Lean has been found to apply in a variety of industries and sectors, including services, health care, government, and education in the developed world. This research shows that Lean (and Six Sigma) also applies to the humanitarian industry and in the developing world.
