Why is it important?
Mindfulness has become the "bright shiny object" as companies look to improve employee wellness, reduce the costs of burnout, and improve leadership performance. Written primarily from the HR perspective, this article provides a practical understanding of mindfulness, its benefits, and useful guidance on how it can be introduced to improve not only employee wellness but also team and leader performance.
Perspectives
After 30 years in HR and chasing my share of bright, shiny objects, I believe the ancient practices of mindfulness may actually offer new approaches to managing ourselves amidst the ever-increasing pace of change, information, and technology. My own mindfulness practices have evolved over 16 years involving martial arts, yoga, breath practice, and meditation. I do not believe mindfulness practices are for everyone anymore than anything is for everyone. I do believe, however, that workers, teams, and leaders can all benefit in their roles as employees and as human beings from practices that reduce stress and help them balance awareness and attention - physical, mental, and emotional.
