What is it about?

This exploratory study reveals how women social entrepreneurs in Indonesia, the most populous Muslim society, use various behaviors to address challenges to their leadership authority. In six case studies, we identify a set of leadership behaviors that women entrepreneurs use to mitigate the constraining impact of the strong patriarchal gender norms in this Muslim society. These behaviors enabled surprisingly effective micro adjustments based on relationship-specific private negotiations with spouses.
