What is it about?

Philanthropy is playing a bigger role than ever in tackling global challenges like poverty, education, and healthcare, especially as government aid budgets shrink. But how do leading philanthropists actually make decisions, and what values guide their work? This article draws on 44 in-depth interviews with some of the world’s most influential philanthropic leaders to explore how they balance business goals, ethical responsibility, and social impact. Instead of relying on theory alone, it captures real-world insights from people working at the highest levels of giving. The study identifies common strategies and ethical concerns, then proposes a practical framework to help philanthropists, businesses, and social investors work more effectively. This framework emphasizes community engagement, strong internal systems, and meaningful collaboration across sectors. By sharing what works and what needs to improve, this article aims to support a more accountable, inclusive, and results-driven approach to philanthropy.
