What is it about?
Map and elucidate the adaptations and challenges faced by the creative professionals and the entrepreneurial solutions they have co-developed. Illuminating how contexts and recent socio-economic disruptive challenges influence how value is created and maintained from start-up to growth and exit, the chapter authors take a fresh look at creative micro-businesses and SMEs, the processes leading to their formation, developments and their founders.

Why is it important?
Creative and cultural industries are growing in almost every nation around the world and over the last two decades have contributed to global, national, and local economies significantly. More recently, policy makers and those who start these creative businesses have demonstrated a greater interest in how creative entrepreneurs create, sustain and market their services and products. And how contexts influence their ‘doing business’ is of increasing importance.
Perspectives
I had the great pleasure in editing this book, consisting of two volumes. In this volume great authors from across the world share their stories of creative entrepreneurs and insights into the challenges and successes of creatives. It was an honour to help some along on the journey to having a great chapter with feedback and support. This volume 1 has one chapter by the editors on the State of the Art - reflecting on what kind of research have we seen and which research is needed going forward. Other chapters discuss innovative concepts, reflect on the mask makers during COVID-19, women's self-help groups, how a social enterprise adapted its offers during COVID-19, and international accounts of the Indian female movie industry, French musicians, the UK fast fashion's industry, creatives in Cameroon or identity reflections. I enjoyed reading them all and suggest them for any secondary school reading or degree module on the creative industries.
