What is it about?
Interlayer strength in the z-direction of 3D printed parts is calculated based on simulations of the polymer chain diffusion across layers.

Why is it important?
This is the first model ever generated (to the authors' knowledge) for predicting strength and diffusion across FDM / FFF layers during the printing process. It is additionally useful because it is based purely on material properties and pre-specified printing conditions, so users can predict strength before ever printing a part.
Perspectives
This article will help advance the understanding, process design, and process control of 3D printing by fused deposition modeling (FDM) by creating a simple yet effective way of describing chain motion across FDM layers.
