What is it about?

Powder bed fusion-laser beam (PBF-LB) can be used to prototype high-pressure die-casting (HPDC). The study compared the microstructures and properties of PBF-LB and HPDC Al-Si alloys. It was found that the outer layer of the PBF-LB alloy is softer than the centre, meaning that strength increases with sample thickness. This is the opposite to the HPDC alloy, which are stronger with decreased sample thickness. Understanding these differences is vital, especially when using PBF-LB for HPDC prototyping.
