Interviews are typically analyzed for their topical content. This article discusses how researchers might examine how interviews are co-constructed, suggesting approaches for how to do this, as well as potential challenges.

Why is it important?

Since interviewers frequently focus only on the content of talk, it is possible to miss the merit of examining how interview interaction proceeds. By examining how interview data are generated, researchers can learn about their practice, in addition to identifying relevant methodological issues.

Perspectives

I've been engaged in analyzing how interviews are co-constructed for some time now. I keep learning more about the complexity of interview interaction, as well as the artful ways that interviewers and interviewees navigate how they ask and respond to questions.
