What is it about?

The effective role of hydrolysis before esterification for producing modified HPC as a promising lyotropic liquid crystal material was assessed. The data of FTIR, NMR, TGA evidenced the esterification of un- and hydrolyzed HPC samples (DS 3.0, 2.1 & 1.3). The degree of substitution (DS) has very significant effect on crystallinity and thermal stability of esterified HPC, especially that produced from HHPC18, and further on the optical properties which noted by the textures of polarizing microscope and decreasing in the critical concentration of display a lyotropic cholesteric liquid-crystalline phase. The promising birefringence texture appeared at concentration 1-5%. Incorporating the GO did not provide any additional improvements
