What is it about?

This study examines how the leadership styles of law enforcement chiefs and supervisors influence officers' intentions to leave their jobs. We analyzed data from over 13,000 officers across the U.S. Our findings show that transformational leadership—where leaders motivate and inspire their teams—significantly reduces officers' turnover intentions. This effect occurs because such leadership enhances officers' job satisfaction and commitment to their organization. Notably, chiefs' leadership directly reduces turnover, while supervisors' leadership achieves this by boosting job satisfaction and commitment. This research underscores the importance of strong, inspirational leadership at all levels within the police force to keep officers engaged and reduce turnover.
