There are myths about people not being able to recover when they are diagnosed with psychotic disorder or schizophrenia. This article discusses recent research on what can help.

Why is it important?

The kind of research discussed here is still not funded to a great degree. Many people who get a diagnosis of a psychotic disorder or schizophrenia do not have access to CBT (cognitive behaviour therapy) to help them develop ways of coping with hearing voices and distressing thoughts, but research is beginning to show this kind of therapy can be helpful. Social support is also vital - and belonging to social groups to which people feel able to make a contribution. The article illustrates some ways this is helpful to people.
