What is it about?

This is a case study about an inspiring lady who Mike Lloyd and I worked with in clinical practice. The range of dissociative experiences MC reported is not as uncommon as people sometimes think. Developing further awareness and understanding of how dissociation can get in the way of things people wish to do and exploring ways of managing distress so as to reduce the need for dissociative coping strategies is a really important area to explore through people's lived experience. Based on MC's love of art and interest in considering how her past experiences influenced her current wellbeing, creative artwork formulation was a great way for us to understand things better and find helpful ways forward.

Why is it important?

Dissociative coping strategies are much more common than is often thought, although sadly overlooked for many, as was the case for MC. Raising awareness of signs of dissociation and helpful approaches towards managing experiences of dissociation is essential. More stories from practice are required to illustrate the variety of approaches that people can find helpful.

Perspectives

For me as a practitioner, writing this report was an opportunity to reflect upon a fantastic learning experience and a reminder of what an honour it is to hear people's stories that show us the amazing ways people can overcome significant challenges.
