What is it about?
Korea has experienced remarkable economic and financial development, transforming from one of the world’s poorest countries into a major global economy. At the same time, its financial markets have undergone substantial changes, including the growth of large business groups known as chaebols, the severe effects of the Asian financial crisis, and major financial reforms. This article introduces a special issue that brings together research on Korean firms and financial markets, covering topics such as corporate finance, investor behavior, financial institutions, venture capital, and corporate ownership.

Why is it important?
Korea provides a distinctive setting for understanding how financial markets and corporate practices evolve as an economy develops and becomes increasingly integrated with global markets. This is the first issue of Managerial Finance devoted entirely to Korean financial markets and the first special issue on Korean financial markets in an academic finance journal published in North America. The studies in the issue examine important aspects of Korean firms and markets and provide insights into how Korea’s unique economic development, corporate structures, financial crises, and reforms have shaped its financial system.
Perspectives
The motivation for this special issue came from recognizing the growing importance of the Korean economy and its financial markets and the increasing body of research examining Korean firms and markets. Korea provides a particularly interesting setting because of its rapid economic development, the important role of chaebols, the effects of the Asian financial crisis, and the financial reforms that followed. We wanted to bring together studies examining different aspects of Korean firms and financial markets and provide a broader understanding of their development and distinctive characteristics. I hope this special issue helps researchers better understand Korean financial markets and encourages further research on Korea and other international financial markets.
