What is it about?

The paper looks at people's views about rivers and streams and what is actually influencing those views. People's views about a river or stream is influenced by the history behind the use of the water, what the water was used for in the past or is being used for currently, what people have told them about the river and what they actually see people use the water for. It is also influenced by the perceived health implications that may result from the use of the water. Poor water and sanitation practices results in water pollution and in turn influence what people perceive of the water.

Why is it important?

This is important because it has shown that if we take steps to understand what is influencing people's perception about the environment we can put in place effective interventions to respond to them. It helps make development interventions more targeted.

Perspectives

This paper establishes that environmental pollution or degradation does not just occur but there are underpinning factors which can actually be investigated and understood. The understanding from this study makes it easier to design pre-emptive and proactive measures to respond to environmental pollution problems.
