Why is it important?
This study is timely as companies face growing pressure to reduce waste and meet climate goals. What makes it unique is showing, step by step, how a large industrial firm actually transformed its business model over time. It offers practical guidance for leaders seeking to turn circular economy ideas into real strategic action.
Perspectives
This study examines how a leading Brazilian petrochemical company transformed its business model toward the circular economy over nearly two decades. Based on 18 interviews and extensive archival data, we trace four phases of change and show how internal capabilities and partnerships evolved. What I find most important is demonstrating that firms in Brazil—often seen as resource-dependent—can lead sustainable innovation and shape global markets rather than simply follow them.
