What is it about?

This study offers a literature review of academic literature focused on the application of institutional theory to the dynamics of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Utilizing a rigorous methodology that combines bibliometric analysis with a systematic literature review, the paper identifies four emergent research clusters, specifically: the role of institutional theory in innovation processes within SMEs; its contribution to fostering the environmental sustainability of SMEs; its impact on the internationalization strategies of SMEs; and its significance in understanding SMEs in emerging markets. The overarching aim of the study is to map the extant knowledge in this scholarly domain, highlight existing research gaps, and consequently suggest avenues for future investigation. The study adds original value to the academic discourse, unveiling areas within each research cluster that warrant further scholarly exploration.
