What is it about?

This paper looks at the evolution of the Bartlett & Ghoshal (1989) transnational typology and analyzes its antecedent works. It combines a business history and an evolutionary approach to the Bartlett & Ghoshal typology of multinational companies (MNCs).

Why is it important?

Although Bartlett & Ghoshal's (1989) Managing across border: the transnational solution was identified by Financial Times as one of the top 50 most influential management books of the 20th century no work has so far adeqautely presented the evolution of this seminal typology, nor systematically analyzed the antecedent works which influenced Bartlett and Ghoshal. The paper also outlines several future research directions at the end.
