What is it about?

This article describes the results of a qualitative survey of academic librarians who produce scholarship or creative work outside of LIS. Survey results reveal librarians’ motivations to perform such work as well as their perceptions of administrators’ attitudes toward it.–

Why is it important?

Librarians reported that they produce non-LIS scholarship and creative work for many reasons, including personal satisfaction, dynamic and successful liaison work, and ongoing personal commitment to scholarship in academic disciplines or professions other than library science as well as to a personal creative practice. Academic librarians who produce non-LIS work do so with varying levels of support, and the recognition of such work is inconsistent among institutions.

Perspectives

Academic library deans, directors, and other administrators will glean much about academic librarians’ attitudes toward such work and how it adds value to the library operation and institution. Findings could affect criteria for reappointment, promotion, and tenure.
