Libraries have used MARC cataloguing for six decades. As a result, over a billion records are in existence worldwide and are used in many different functions in libraries. Because of this, it is very difficult to replace MARC with something more modern. Recent attempts to do so have been slow and largely not sucessful. Change will happen but it might come from a different type of technology such as the new AI-based ones.
