What is it about?
This article gives a bird’s-eye-view of the revision of almost two decade old European Union (EU) Copyright Act which came into effect on June 7, 2019. The revision in the form of Directive claims to provide a level playing field for all the stakeholders of European Union. The communication also highlights controversial Articles especially Article 15 and 17 around which there have been fierce debate among stakeholders and intense lobbying by tech giants like Google, Facebook, etc. on introduction of content filtering mechanism. Taking a lead from content filtering mechanism, the study suggests that research of greater magnitude might be required to understand efficacy of content filtering mechanism to control spread of misinformation during COVID-19 pandemic. The article concludes with a note on effects of the Directive on libraries, archives, research communities with special reference to India.
